Obstetrics Scan

A )  First trimester scan

This is also known as dating scan, viability scan, early pregnancy assessment or early pregnancy scan.

Common reason for assessment:

  • To assess viability. If you see a fetal heart it means the baby is alive.

  • To assess common maternal gynecological abnormalities such as fibroid, ovarian cyst.

  • To confirm a pregnancy after a self- tested positive pregnancy test. After a 1 week of missed period, you can see a gestational sac.

  • Unexplained bleeding in early pregnancy.

  • Pelvic pain in early pregnancy. Before the advent of  ultrasound, the doctor have difficult in confirming the cause of pelvic pain due to ovarian cyst, abortion, fibroid.

  • Severe nausea and vomiting.

  • Possible miscarriage / ectopic pregnancy in early pregnancy. Ectopic pregnancy is a life threatening condition. Ultrasound can suggest it by the present of fluid in pelvis and absent of pregnancy in uterus.

  • To detect a twin/ multiple pregnancy.
