This is also known as dating
scan, viability scan, early pregnancy assessment or early pregnancy
scan.
Common reason for assessment:
To assess viability. If you see a fetal
heart it means the baby is alive.
To date a
pregnancy. This is done by measuring crown lump length (head
to buttock) and with a standard chart, the baby's gestation is
known.
To assess
normal progression of baby's development so far.
To
assess common maternal gynecological abnormalities such as
fibroid, ovarian cyst.
To confirm
a pregnancy after a self- tested positive pregnancy test.
After a 1 week of missed period, you can see a gestational
sac.
Unexplained
bleeding in early pregnancy.
Pelvic pain
in early pregnancy. Before the advent of ultrasound, the
doctor have difficult in confirming the cause of pelvic pain
due to ovarian cyst, abortion, fibroid.
Severe
nausea and vomiting.
Possible
miscarriage / ectopic pregnancy in early pregnancy. Ectopic
pregnancy is a life threatening condition. Ultrasound can
suggest it by the present of fluid in pelvis and absent of
pregnancy in uterus.
To detect a twin/ multiple pregnancy.
